The BHP Experience at the Newcastle Museum - Mental Media

Newcastle Museum

Recreating the experience of a large steelworks in an empty railway shed was the challenge set by the Newcastle Museum for the BHP Experience. AS the steelworks in Newcastle had been closed for some years, we journeyed to Port Kembla steelworks for reference, as well as interviewing many ex-employees of the steelworks who still reside in Newcastle.

Incorporating real objects such as the 70 ton steel ladle and a giant ingot car as part of the set, Mental Media dressed and built additional objects and scenery, from “steel” girders to a working overhead crane track and ladle that moved. Extensive use of effects lighting and theatrical smoke provide the “wow” factor, while narration is provided by Harry, the holographic crane driver who explains the process.
